Winter in North America can get harsh. During this time, Tulasi devi needs more attention. Today it was snowing outside, but inside the Tulasi room it was a balmy 82 degrees, and humid. This is how she can live through the cold winter.
This Tulasi came to us pretty malnourished and sick. I nursed her back to health by giving sufficient light, a warm and humid room, and great organic nutrients. The nutrients I use have to be added with every watering, which in the winter is only once every 10 days or so. Find it here
Also, by the advice of a friend, she is sitting on a seedling heating pad. The reason is to keep the roots 10 or 20 degrees higher than the ambient air temperature. I can tell its working because shes growing pretty quick now. You can find that here
She's even growing manjari now. In the winter!
Good Evening,
ReplyDeleteMy tulasi plant grew well for 2 weeks and after that the leaves seem to be folding inwards and turning dark drown around the edges. I am not sure what is going on, can you help me?
Watering her once in every two to three days.
Using room humidifier 24 hrs.
Using a GRO LED light for 12 to 14 hours.
There is no new growth since a week. Plant is about 4 inches tall.
Do you know why leaves would fold inwards?
Thank you very much.

You are watering her too much. In the winter, I am watering my Tulasi every 10 days or so. The curling of the leaves means overwatering. It's better to underwater her than over water.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for your reply. Whenever I water, I limit water to only two tablespoons.
DeleteI use a clay pot. There is also a weed growing in the pot and I do not know how to take it out fearing that it would disturb tulsi's roots. Any suggestions?
Her leaves near the root are drooling. I do not know how to focus the light towards those bottom leaves. How close can I put the overhead light around her? I am wondering if there is enough light for her. I bought LED Grow Light, TaoTronics from Amazon. It has three blue LED lights and based on my research blue light is important for leaves but not sure how to focus those blue lights towards root.

Thanks for having this blog. It really helps.
You should not water so little each time. You should water so much until it comes out the bottom of the pot. Then you should not water until she is very dry. The way you are doing it with 2 tablespoons, that's risky for getting root rot. If she is still small, then the overhead light is enough.
DeleteThank you but the clay pot does not have a drain so I am not sure how the water will drain out of the pot. I plucked the weed out with root, it did disturb the tulsi roots but I am hoping that she will thrive after this.
DeleteOn taking a close look at the images on this page, my plant looks exactly like the one on left. Its leaves are purple and drooling downwards. I thought if leaves are purple, it is Krishna Tulsi. Is not that right?

ReplyDeleteAny tips, why I am getting small flies in my Tulasli devi pots?
What is the best way to avoid pest or any insecticide. I was bit concern if I use any hardware store one. I have checked few which they claim are organic and safe of edible plants like herbs.
thanks
Haribol prabhu,
DeleteI use this:
https://www.treehelp.com/safers-end-all-ii/
I swear by it. Its the best stuff out there for pests. but for soil, try to just keep it clean, and if you see flys, spray them lightly with this spray. try not to get so much, that she drinks it.
hope that helps,
nrd
You can also buy Neem oil from the nearest Home Depot or Lowe's. Neem oil is organic pest killer. Just mix it with some water and spray over the soil. Works perfect on all plants.
DeleteOil will not mix with water. You have to mix vigoursly to form an emulsion.
